South Arran Marine Protected Area
The Scottish Government states that its aim is to achieve a well-managed network of Marine Protected Areas based on the principle of sustainable use and is seeking views on the case for designation of possible MPAs. One of the proposed areas is South Arran
The Community of Arran Seabed Trust, COAST, is recognised as one of the UK’s leading community marine conservation organisations and rightly enjoys widespread support on Arran and nationally. The view of COAST is that in general the proposed MPA network represents an exciting opportunity for Scotland and our coastal communities. COAST feels that the South Arran MPA is an opportunity to bring real environmental, social and economic benefits by protecting and helping to restore fragile marine habitats in our waters.
I whole heartedly support COAST on this issue and would encourage everyone with a love of Arran to look at the government proposals and comment on these proposals before consultation closes on 13 November 2013. A good place to start is COAST’s website http://www.arrancoast.com/news/current-newsletter.html
